Kotor shore excursions start the moment you step off the ship: the cruise pier sits right in front of the Old Town walls, and the mountains rise straight out of the bay behind them. In one port day you can walk the medieval lanes, climb to the fortress or ride up into the hills for views that most passengers never see.
This guide explains how a cruise day in Kotor usually works, what you can see on foot in a few hours, and which off-road rides fit a ship schedule. It also covers pick-up, timing and what to bring, so you can plan your day before you arrive.
How a cruise day in Kotor works
Kotor lies deep inside the Bay of Kotor, so the sail in past Perast and the steep mountain walls is part of the experience. Go on deck early for it. Depending on the size of the ship and how many ships are in port, you either dock at the pier facing the Sea Gate or anchor in the bay and take a tender boat to the same landing. The Old Town gate is only a few minutes on foot from there.
Tendering takes longer than walking off a docked ship, so on a tender day allow some extra time at the start and the end of your visit. Always plan around the all-aboard time printed in your ship's daily programme, not the departure time. In July and August several large ships can call on the same day, and the Old Town is busiest from mid-morning to mid-afternoon.
What to see in Kotor in a few hours
The walled Old Town is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site and is small enough to explore on foot in two or three hours. Walk in through the Sea Gate, find the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon from the 12th century, and get lost in the small squares and marble lanes. If your ship arrives early, head for the town first and enjoy it before the busiest hours.
The classic climb goes up the city walls to San Giovanni Fortress, also called St John's Fortress: roughly 1,350 steps to a point about 260 metres above the town. Most people need about an hour to go up, plus time at the top. Entry to the walls is paid in season, the steps are uneven and there is almost no shade, so take water and good shoes and avoid the midday heat.

Off-road shore excursions above Kotor
Most organised shore excursions from Kotor are coach trips along the bay. If you would rather spend your port day outdoors, a guided quad or buggy ride takes you up the old Austro-Hungarian military roads above the bay in a few hours. The guide speaks English, every tour starts with a short safety briefing, and the pace is calm enough for first-time riders.
Vrmac Ridge Panorama: the best fit for most port days
Vrmac is the green ridge between the Bay of Kotor and the Bay of Tivat. The Vrmac Ridge Panorama Tour climbs through the forest to Sveti Ilija, the highest point of the ridge, with views over Kotor Old Town, Tivat, the Luštica peninsula and the open sea. It takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, by quad or by buggy, and it is a relaxed panoramic ride with plenty of photo stops rather than a race.

Fort Goražda: a short ride for tight schedules
If your ship is in port for only part of the day, the Fort Goražda Off-Road Tour is the shortest option at about 1.5 to 2 hours. Forest trails lead up to an Austro-Hungarian fort from the late 19th century, with massive stone walls, a dry moat, underground rooms and a rare armoured turret on top. You explore the safe parts of the fort on foot with your guide, then enjoy the view over the Bay of Tivat and Mount Lovćen.
On a long port day, Fort Goražda combines well with the Vrmac ride for a fuller day of views and history. Mention it when you book and the guide will tell you if it fits your schedule.
Late departure or overnight call: the Vrmac Night Tour
Some ships leave Kotor late in the evening or stay overnight. In that case look at the Vrmac Night Tour, a 2.5 hour ride that starts around sunset. You ride up to Sveti Ilija for the last light over Tivat and the sea, then to a hidden forest viewpoint that looks straight down on the illuminated walls of Kotor Old Town. Bring a light jacket, as evenings on Vrmac are cooler than on the coast.

Pick-up and timing for cruise passengers
Pick-up near the cruise terminal can be arranged. When you send your booking request, tell us the name of your ship, your arrival time and your all-aboard time. Your guide then plans the ride around your schedule so that you are back in time, and sends you the exact meeting point and time by phone or WhatsApp.
There is no prepayment: you send a request, the guide confirms it, and you pay on the day. If your plans change, for example because the ship has to tender, simply message the guide on WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions
How much time do you need for a Kotor shore excursion?
Allow two to three hours for the Old Town, plus about one to two hours if you climb the fortress. A Fort Goražda ride takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and the Vrmac Ridge Panorama about 2.5 to 3 hours, so on a full port day you can combine the Old Town with one ride.
Can you pick us up at the cruise port?
Yes, pick-up near the cruise terminal can be arranged. Tell us your ship, arrival time and all-aboard time when you book, and the guide will plan the ride so you are back in time.
Do I need a driving licence for a quad tour?
The driver must be at least 18 with a valid car (category B) licence. Passengers do not need one, and on the Vrmac Ridge Panorama Tour you can also choose a buggy.
